Saudi Arabia has announced a dress code for women performing the Umrah pilgrimage.
A report by Arabian Business newspaper indicated that
the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah outlined clothing considered suitable for female pilgrims visiting holy sites.
The Ministry said women are entitled to wear clothing of their choices, provided they adhere to certain guidelines.
Saudi ministry defines Umrah dress code
In a statement on social media, according to Arabian Business, the Ministry said: “Females are permitted to wear any clothing of their choice for pilgrimage or Umrah, as long as the following conditions are met:
• “The clothing should be wide and loose-fitting
• “It should not have any decorative elements
• “The clothing should cover the entire body”
Umrah is the name given to a voluntary pilgrimage to Mecca undertaken by Muslims.
Authorities in Saudi Arabia expect around 10m international visitors to perform Umrah pilgrimage to the Grand Mosque in Mecca this season.
